Happy June, everyone! I hope you’re keeping busy and staying cool. It’s been a challenge to entertain my littles (7 and 1 respectively) whith weather pushing into the upper-nineties, and feeling more like the hundreds. We’ve had lots of indoor dance parties and puzzle times, with plenty of visits to the library in between. Speaking of books, my son finished his first full-length chapter book on his own: Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I was such a proud mamma and excited to see him continue to develop the same love for books as I had at his age.

Have you ever wished someone had bridged the magic of unicorns with science when you were a child? Having grown up watching the original My Little Pony, I would have done much better in class if the creators had merged science into the mixture. This is the quirky brilliance behind Sybrina Durant’s Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. Durant is on a mission to simplify the periodic table and makes it accessible for kids in a unique and creative way. By giving each unicorn’s horn a different metal base, she gives us a mascot or “face” to each name. As a visual learner, this would have helped me so much when I took Chemistry. Each page features a different unicorn and metal, with plenty of fun facts scattered throughout.
As much as I enjoyed the concept, I felt like there was almost too much information cluttered on every page. This is much more an encyclopedia, or a science class workbook, not necessarily something I’d read to my kid before bed. When I tried reading to my seven-year-old boy, who is a big reader, he lost interest fairly quickly. Something that might help engage younger readers would be to half the amount of information and to allow more negative space on every page. Each spread contains so much, I think it could even be useful to create a picture book for each unicorn, describing their element(s) and fun facts. This wouldn’t just make the information easier for smaller kids to digest but also make for a super fun and informative series. The encyclopedia could then be used as a reference for every unicorn and element from the series.
All this being said, I enjoyed Sybrina Durant’s vision behind Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. This would be the perfect gift for any middle-grade student (or grown-up) still in love with unicorns who needs a crash course in the magic found within science.

It sounds like this book is in the vein of the illustrated reference books my kids devoured when they were young; the pages were packed with information and eye-catching photos/drawings. My 26yo still has book about Knights! Thanks for a great review.
