Book Review: Frowns and Gowns by Amanda M. Thrasher

Happy Friday, fairy friends! If you’re here, you probably never quite shook the habit of believing (or wanting to believe) in fairies. Guilty as charged! My son asked me very matter-of-factly the other day if I really believed in fairies and magic. Naturally, I told him, “of course.” Because I truly believe there are many things about our world that remain unexplained. And isn’t life a bit more wonderous and lovely if we choose to believe in something as sweet as fairies?

I had the fortune to read Amanda M. Thrasher’s earlier installment in The Mischief Series, so I was excited to see what Lily and her fairling friends had been up to recently. And on that note, I hope y’all enjoy discovering more about The Mischief Series! Stay tuned for fantastical things to come!

Review

5 of 5 Stars

“I think tonight is such a special night, and the rules can be set aside for this evening. Don’t you?”

Amanda M. Thrasher does it again with her latest in The Mischief Series: Frowns and Gowns. Lilly and her cute and quirky fairling friends are back for a new bedazzling adventure much closer to home. Soon, they will attend their first fairy ball. Only it’s going to take everyone’s hard work, cooperation, and an extra pinch of fairy dust to pull off a truly magical event.

Fans of the series should be able to read Frowns and Gowns out of order from the rest of the series. However, I’d recommend at least reading the first book for more adventure and more about what makes Lilly a very special fairling.

Frowns and Gowns is a truly sweet and light fantasy for anyone who wants to believe in fairies. No cruelty at this academy for fairlings, only kindness, mind-reading teachers, and a mischievous spider ready to aid Lilly and company in their escapades. Thrasher manages to capture many fun coming-of-age moments: fairy style.

  1. I came across a video on YouTube where someone is talking about people’s encounters with fairies. I have probably believed in them since forever, but I have always felt this world is not what it seems. There are things we have yet to discover in our oceans, forests, and mountains. We cannot truly say what is and what isn’t out there, including fairies. So I believe wholeheartedly that anything is possible. And this book you shared sounds very sweet.

    1. That’s super interesting! I know there are folks out there who believe in them wholeheartedly and are open about it, like Brian and Wendy Froud. And I’ve always been more inclined to believe in the unseen. I agree completely with our world. It’s baffling that even experts say we know more about space than our oceans.

This was such a sweet read, a great series for tweens, or if you’re a big kid like me, lol.
