Teaser Tuesday: Scarred Beauty

Vynashaโ€™s vision turned red. Red like Wynythโ€™s roses, like the blood theyโ€™d shed to make new life. Red like her fatherโ€™s lifeblood seeping into the river. Red like the ruby on the hilt of her dagger, glinting in the sun as she pressed its blade to the alphaโ€™s neck.

Her first clear memory was of Ceddrychโ€™s smiling golden face as he helped her cross the yard to Motherโ€™s rose garden. A time when the land was in bloom and the world shone in her childโ€™s gaze with an effervescent glow. Vynasha had seen magick in everything when she was still small, before Wynythโ€™s passing the following winter. โ€œWatch over my little starling,โ€ Mother had whispered with her dying breath. Ceddrych had only drawn Vynasha closer and sworn, โ€œWith my life.โ€

Happy Birthday Craving Beauty!

It's release day but it's also my birthday! Yep, I did a silly thing and thought what better present to myself than to share my latest book baby with the world. But it's not just Craving Beauty's birthday, and it's not just mine. Once upon a time, it was my grandma's too.

Teaser Tuesday: Craving Beauty

โ€œThe Wylder Mountains are cursed, Beauty,โ€ the beggar said with a harsh rasp. โ€œand your kin could not leave of their own free will. I promised to find you, to tell you they yet live.โ€

Vynasha rocked with him beneath the barn overhang, within the snowdrifts, and whispered against his skin. She uttered forbidden words her mother had whispered to her deep in the night, in that strange musical tongue Vynasha had half forgotten. She remembered it now as the darkness stirred beneath her skin. โ€œWe must be careful, my starling,โ€ Mother had made her promise. โ€œBe oh, so careful. To give life, we must always sacrifice.โ€ The little body in her arms did not grow cold as it should have. It shuddered against her in spasms. Vynasha squeezed her eyes tightly shut as the little hands clenched her arms in a tight grasp. Wyll sucked in a hoarse gasp as he breathed new life. The little boy whimpered and then spoke as though back from a long sleep, โ€œAsha?โ€

Vynasha ignored the way the snow soaked through her house slippers. Sheโ€™d forgotten her boots and her coat. But the darkness still clawed at her skin, begging to be set free. She didnโ€™t dare turn back.ย

Weekly Writerly Witterings ~ Your Writing Craft

The best advice I can offer you is to not be your worst enemy. Youโ€™ll always find someone out there who is better (or more experienced) than you are. But when you focus too much on how much better someone else seems to be or be doing, itโ€™s way too easy to lose sight of your progress. Remember, if youโ€™re writing, youโ€™re constantly growing your craft. It wonโ€™t happen overnight. Itโ€™s going to take time, hard work, and little thanks in the beginning (sometimes longer).
