The Edge of Too Late by Jan Sikes: Book Review

It’s the holiday season and I’m excited to share another fantastic book from the folks at Lone Star Literary Life! I just have to add the caveat that I finished this book right around the same time my toddler developed a cold… which she promptly passed on to me. My throat aches despite my tenth cup of honey tea. The tissues have been piling around my desktop. But I couldn’t help smiling while putting this review together. Because no matter what, through bad times and good, books have always been there alongside me and continue to pull me through. I may have been a sick mother in real life, but in the past week, I ventured back to the late 80s with a couple to the supernaturally inclined Harbor Pointe. Wherever you’re at today, I invite you to hop into the not-so-way-back machine with me and discover more about The Edge of Too Late by Jan Sikes.

Brandon Miller has his dream job, financial security, and he’s madly in love. Only one thing is missing—a commitment.

Angela Cooper’s ex-husband left her with deep scars, souring her on the concept of marriage. She’s not interested in a do-over. Not with Brandon or anyone. Her heart is locked securely away behind a thick wall.

With a ring in his pocket and hope in his heart, Brandon arranges a romantic getaway to the historic Harbor Pointe Inn, where he plans to pop the question.

Before they reach the inn, Angela’s got her camera in hand and ghosts on her mind. But they arrive to find a much more tangible horror.

Accident or foul play?

Someone is up to no good, and Angela is the next target. When suspects can be worldly or otherworldly, danger and secrets lurk everywhere.

Poised at the perilous edge of too late, Angela and Brandon face the fight of their lives.

Thrilling suspense set on the harbor. Ghosts and a camera-wielding empath set to uncover a deadly mystery. Swoon-worthy romance you can sigh along with. Author Jan Sikes packs a literary punch with her latest in the Harbor Pointe Book Series: The Edge of Too Late.

Brandon and Angela have different expectations for their vacation at Harbor Pointe Inn. For Brandon, he may finally convince the love of his life to say yes to his proposal. For Angela, it’s a chance to escape mundanity and enjoy her favorite hobby on the arm of her favorite guy. But Angela has been married and burned before. She refuses to lose herself in another relationship. Brandon knows Angela’s holding back from completely falling for him, but he’s confident everything will change after the romantic trip he has planned. But the idyllic inn they’re staying at holds many secrets. A woman is wheeled to the hospital upon their arrival. Did she fall by accident, or was she pushed? Or is there something more sinister and maybe even supernatural going on? Angela is soon troubled by supernatural visions, and a mysterious stranger haunts their steps. If they aren’t careful, they may not survive the trip long enough for Brandon to pop “the question.”

Within a single conversation in the first chapter, I was hooked. Jan Sikes expertly delivers punchy dialogue, hopping seamlessly between points of view. You get an instant feel for who these people are, their dreams and hopes guiding them to the present. Taking place in the late 80s in a tourist-driven harbor town, the atmosphere is perfectly dreary and dreamy. And the setting allows us a glimpse into the recent past when people couldn’t immediately check a photo or their latest status updates. Angela must rely on her wits, and the camera she carries everywhere, to capture clues to the mystery unfurling as they arrive at Harbor Pointe.

Brandon is the perfect happy-go-lucky foil for Angela’s more serious, empathic character. A self-made man on the ground floor of the booming video game business, Brandon hasn’t let success get to his head. He has the means to wine and dine Angela, and hopefully convince her to “say yes,” but he truly cares more about her as a person. His enduring charm won me over officially, even with his annoying nickname: Angie-baby. I could put up with that, too, if my guy treated me as sweetly and genuinely as Brandon does Angela.

A quick and enjoyable read, Book 5 of the Harbor Pointe series is easy for first-time readers to follow. I highly recommend The Edge of Too Late for romance readers seeking a little more danger and noir mystery alongside romantic declarations of love.

Meet Jan Sikes

Jan Sikes writes compelling and creative stories from the heart. She openly admits that she never set out in life to be an author. But she had a story to tell. Not just any story, but a true story that rivals any fiction creation. She brought the entertaining true story to life through fictitious characters in an intricately woven tale encompassing four books, accompanying music CDs, and a book of poetry and art. And now, this author can’t find a way to put down the pen. She continues to write fiction and has published numerous award-winning short stories and novels.

Jan is an active blogger, an avid fan of Texas music, and a grandmother of five. She resides in North Texas.

  3. I’m so sorry about your cold! Since starting school, my 8-year-old hasn’t met a cold she hasn’t brought home to play with, and she feels obligated to introduce us to her new friend, so… I feel your pain…

Thanks for the review! I bought it last week and it’s on my tbr. Now, to find the time to read all these books 😀

    1. Haha, I can relate to this so much! I have a 7-year-old as well and I’m fairly certain he’s the source of every new germ that makes its sinister way to us.

Happy you enjoyed the review! This really was such a fantastic and quick read. There really is never enough time. My TBR pile never gets smaller, just replaced with more books 😀

I am thrilled with your review. It means so much to an author to know their message and story was well-received. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
