permission to escape

I’ll be posting fairly close together since this is technically intended for last week. But I’ve struggled to find moments to write. And I’ll be honest, when I wasn’t spending time with my kids this past weekend, I was taking advantage of my free time. A year or two ago, I made the conscious decision to make myself stay away from laptops and to do those wonderful mind-suck things that help me recharge. So what are my time-suck things? Okay, prepare yourself to learn just how much of a nerd you probably already guess I am…

  1. Video Games: I’ve played off and on since the days of Super Nintendo. And while I really struggled to get used to the joysticks and 3D aspect of modern games, once I discovered Skyrim, I haven’t looked back. I always guilted myself for playing, knowing there are endless things I should be doing instead. A decade later, I think so long as it doesn’t turn you into a rage monster, or neglectful parent/partner, then why not let yourself have fun? My favorite game of all time to date? Dragon Age: Inquisition. I am so excited for DA4 as much as I am nervous about it living up to the hype, naturally.
  1. Books: My first and likely last loves! I love blogging about books and reviewing books, both for authors and fellow bloggers, but also for myself. I feel like it’s my way to give back for all the bookish community has done for me over the years 🙂 But I have to confess, sometimes I struggle to read real novels. Maybe because it’s become a responsibility and not always an escape? A wonderful exception to the rule has been Dan Jones’ fantastic medieval and ancient history books, and the guilty pleasure works of Karen Marie Moning.
  1. Fanfiction: Laugh all you want, but fanfic got me writing seriously when I was convinced I would only ever be a hobbyist. It was the feedback I got from writing fanfics that showed me how wonderful it felt to hear from readers. When I had no funds or means to publish around 2020, the fanfic community was there for me and encouraged me to pick myself up again. So what’s the appeal? Besides the community aspect, I love the endless explorations into “what-if” certain stories went a different way. I love when some writers turn a story on its head and make it so much better. Case in point? Making Hermione Granger the heroine and MC in the Harry Potter-verse. I’ll always be Team Hermione 😉

These are a few of my favorite things, as Maria once sang. What are your favorite forms of escape? No matter your favs, I hope you remember to give yourself permission to escape for a little while. We all have an endless to-do list. So give yourself an hour here and there to have fun. Adults need to “play” sometimes, too. It’s what helps us find that little extra spark of joy or inspiration again.
