why I love artists

I’ve been surrounded by artists since I was a child. My uncle’s preferred medium is ink, and he’s always created cartoons with so much fantastic and hilarious detail, I sometimes hate that he never pursued that as a career. My mom is a painter, from oils to acrylics, but she also crotched blankets, sewed dresses and has a love for crafting. Even my grandma used to sit and sketch all of us with surprising realism… until she started to draw over her sketch too much (lol).

Suffice to say, art was simply a part of my life. It was only natural that I started sketching and painting when I was a small child. I went to university with the intention of an art degree. But like so many of my generation, bills and the structure of college became too overwhelming. In hindsight, I wish I had gone to an art school instead. But I’m grateful for those hours I spent deep-diving into pastels and charcoals, oils and acrylics. These days, I rarely pick up a sketchbook, unless my nieces and nephews want to draw with me. But it’s still one of my favorite hobbies, and something I know I’ll come back to once my toddler is a bit older (and not getting into everything in my lap on a given day…)

Even though I turned my creativity in a different direction, I’m lucky to work with our illustrators at Qamber Designs today. I’m a traditional artist, and much prefer the grit that comes from using physical mediums. But I’m always amazed by the gorgeous creations our artists make day-to-day. Some are primarily digital artists, but others create traditionally by hand, then scan and tweak on the computer. It’s probably for this reason that I love my day job so much. Not only do I get to help authors create beautiful book interiors and covers, but I am surrounded daily by beautiful art. So I am constantly inspired to create in turn. I hope you, too, are inspired today!

Speaking of artists…I was beyond excited to commission the insanely gifted Magdalena to create a piece for the Wylder Tales series! We’re still making a few minor tweaks, but I had to share the black-and-white sketch with y’all today. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!

recent reads I’m crazy about…

I finally finished Coming Home to the Highlands, a cozy romance read about a woman finding her place in the world and reconnecting with her first crush/childhood bully. It was a little too fluffy for me at times, haha, but it was also a fantastic pallet cleanser from my usual heavier fantasy favs. Also recently re-read Safari Spell’s Long Live Dead Reckless to refresh my memory before finally diving into Book 2! Stay tuned for my thoughts… Otherwise, I must confess I took a break from actual literature and did a nose-dive into fanfiction. This was a treat to myself after finishing and publishing Scarred Beauty. Not sure what works for you, but I tend to work best when I create little rewards for myself along the way ๐Ÿ˜‰
